STOW YOUTH FOOTBALL & CHEER

Cheer Information

NEW FOR THE 2024 SYF CHEER SEASON

SYF Cheer has been growing exponentially over the years! While we love the growth and interest in cheer, there are only a limited number of spots available at each grade level’s cheer squad. The number of cheer squads are directly correlated to the number of football teams for any given season. For the past several seasons, we have had waitlists at each grade level hours after registration opens. In order to fairly fill the available spots on each squad, SYF Cheer will be holding tryouts for all children grades 1-6 that wish to cheer on Saturday squads for the 2024 season. Tryouts are mandatory for all cheerleaders in all grades that wish to cheer on Saturday squads for the SYF season. Please continue reading for more information regarding tryouts.

SYF&C will also be starting a new cheer program called the Stow Youth Cheer Spirit Squad. The SYCSS is an opportunity for everyone to be a part of SYF&C. There will be no more waitlists to be involved in SYF Cheer! See below for more information.

  • Why Tryouts?

Tryouts are not new to SYF Cheer. In past seasons, children have had to try out for open spots on SYF Cheer squads. Tryouts are traditionally held at the middle school and high school levels, this allows SYF to align with Kimpton and SMFHS. Over the years, we have noticed that athletes are not prepared for tryouts at 7th grade. Filling available spots on a first come first serve basis does not allow for an equal chance for all children interested in cheer to be placed on SYF cheer squads. For the past several years, when registration has opened, cheer squads have filled within hours. Tryouts will eliminate the stress of signing up for families.

  • When are tryouts?

We will hold a mandatory clinic for those children that wish to try out for the regular SYF season. The clinic will be at Kimpton Middle School from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Clinic dates are: Monday, April 29th, Tuesday, April 30th, and Wednesday, May 1st. Tryouts will take place on Saturday, May 4th beginning at 8am. More detailed times will be released based on grade level the week of clinics. There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Monday, April 29th in the Kimpton  Auditorium at 6pm.  Please make sure at least one parent or guardian attends this meeting.

  • What do tryouts consist of?

All athletes will be prepared for tryouts at the mandatory clinic the week prior to tryouts. Athletes will be asked to demonstrate jumps, motions, perform a chant, and perform a short dance (Dance will not be included for grades 1 and 2). These skills will be taught at the clinic however, practicing at home is strongly encouraged.

  • How do I register?

Registration for the 2024 SYF Regular season tryouts will open via the SYF&C website (stowyouthfootball.org) on February 20, 2024.  Registration will close on March 31, 2024.

  • What is included with my child’s spot in a Saturday Squad?

Saturday Squad athletes will have the following included:

    • Stow Youth Cheer T-shirt
    • Bow
    • Participation in the Stow 4th of July Parade
    • 2-3 practices a week, details will be given at a later date*

    • competition squad*
    • Participation in the Stow Homecoming Parade
    • Priority registration for Stow Cheer Camps and Clinics

    * indicates mandatory participation

  • What happens if my child does not get a spot in a Saturday Squad?

They will be offered the option to be a part of the Stow Youth Cheer Spirit Squad.

  • Will there be an opportunity to be added to additional Saturday Squads?

Yes! Lists will be formed from tryout scores and athletes will be pulled from them as spots become available according to coaching and number of football teams per grade. Again, the number of cheer squads is directly correlated to the number of football teams for any given season. However, everyone gets a chance to be a part of SYF Cheer through the Stow Youth Spirit Squad!

  • When will I have to pay my registration fee?

If you choose to only participate in the Stow Youth Cheer Spirit Squad, you may pay  your registration fee when you sign up. For those who are offered a spot on Saturday  Squads, you will be sent a link after tryout to complete registration. Registration fees  for Saturday Squads will be due on Sunday, May 19th.

  • How do regular season tryouts differ from Competition squad tryouts?

Competition squads will be made up of the highest scoring cheerleaders that have indicated they would like to be on a competition squad on their tryout form. Competition squads will typically be smaller than the Saturday squads and are only for grades 3-6.

  • What is the Stow Youth Cheer Spirit Squad?

The Spirit Squad is designed to give everyone the opportunity to be a part of Stow
